BSN Curriculum

Course No: NURS 410, Course Title: Human Genetics in Nursing Practice. This course provides nursing students with basic information about the influences of genetics on human health and illness. Students will gain practice in applying important tools for effective genetic nursing practice. Students will learn about basic genetic science/ molecular concepts, the ethical and social implications of genetic information, commonly used genetic tests, genetic history taking, and pedigree construction and will become experienced in the use of professional and client-based resources to support evidence based health care and life-long learning in applied human genetics.

Course No: NURS 410, Course Title: Human Genetics in Nursing Practice. This course provides nursing students with basic information about the influences of genetics on human health and illness. Course No: NURS 413, Course Title: Psychiatric/ Mental Health Nursing. This course is designed to introduce students to knowledge and skills related to psychiatric/mental health nursing in the context of mental illness-wellness continuum and  from adaptability to maladaptability. It focus on the role of the psychiatric and mental health nurse in the care of mentally ill people and their families. The importance of the nurse-patient relationship is identified as an essential component of all interactions with mental health clients. Critical-thinking exercises throughout the course enhance self-awareness of the values and beliefs related to caring for patients with mental health challenge and the importance of ethical and legal issues and their implications to mental health and mentally ill people.

Course No: NURS 414, Course Title: Clinical application of Psychiatric / Mental Health Nursing. This course is designed for nursing students and focuses on the care of persons of various age groups with psychiatric mental health disorders and maladaptative alterations in mental health. Emphasis is on the therapeutic use of self with individuals, families, and groups in an acute psychiatric care setting. Communication skills, mental health assessment, and various therapeutic interventions  and nursing process are utilized by students in clinical placements.

Course No: NURS 416, Course Title: Community Health Nursing. This course is designed to acquire the students with a broad perspective of community health nursing by applying different concepts of community health nursing with emphasis on health promotion and primary health care. It facilitates the conceptualizing of family, population groups, and community as units of care.  The course focuses on risk reduction, health maintenance, and promotion of high level wellness to individuals, families, and groups of all ages throughout the health continuum.

Course No: NURS 417, Course Title: Clinical application of Community Health Nursing. This course is designed to help students to apply community assessment as well as utilizing the nursing process for individuals and family in wellness and illness in various community settings . Health promotion and disease prevention strategies are used in primary health care, home health care, geriatric homes and rehabilitative care settings. Analysis of the health care delivery system includes the impact of political, legal, social and cultural influences on the health of clients. Special focus is given to nursing roles to promote health status of individuals across the lifespan, families, groups, aggregates, and community.
